Telephone Network H.323 Interface Technical Specifications

Introduction

This document has been prepared to describe the standards of H.323 signaling used by operators and customers receiving phone service via Koç.net infrastructure. H.323 is one of the Koç.net telephone network interfaces.

1- Description

This document lists the characteristics which may be required for defining the interface of the Telecommunications Network, but does not provide guidelines on the style of presentation of interface publications. In addition, this document makes references to ETSI and RFC printouts concerning network interfaces and presenting the use of other technologies.

Other operators access Koç.net backbone through devices called SBC included in our interface and in communication with both our internal network and internet. They ensure a secure and controlled transmission of H.323 calls from the internet to Koç.net phone backbone. A line is installed for corporate customers to access Koç.net backbone, and access to phone infrastructure is provided using H.323 protocol via this line.

5 - Parameters to be Specified

This section describes the Koç.net standards specified for customers access via the Koç.net H.323 interface as well as Koç.net's capabilities.

5-1 H.323 backbone telephone communications characteristics

Koç.net phone backbone serves customers with a central set of devices called softswitch using the H.323 protocol. These devices are designed to operate in compliance with the following standards.

5-1-1 Physical characteristics

Other operators do not require a physical connection with Koç.net to receive an H.323 protocol-based service from Koç.net phone services. Koç.net provides this service through internet. Therefore, the operator only needs its own internet access.

Koç.net sets up a physical connection interface for access to our corporate subscribers.

5-1-2 Access protocols

Customers connect to Koç.net interfaces through specified physical infrastructures using the Internet Protocol (IP).

5-1-3 H.323 Protocol features

H.323 includes a number of standards set by ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union) which determines a number of protocols enabling audio-visual communication over a computer network. H.323 is a protocol that specifies the use of various ITU-T and IETF protocols. H.323 consists of the following protocols;

H.225[3]: The protocol that ensures signaling between two H.323 devices. Koç.net telephone infrastructure has been configured to operate in compliance with H.225 standards in the H.323 protocol. The standards of H.225 signaling are specified in the ITU-T Recommendation Q.931.

H.245[2]: This protocol is used by devices in communication to find out phone and multimedia capabilities of each another in the course of H.323 signaling. The standards of H.245 signaling are specified in the ITU-T H.245 Recommendation.

Koç.net uses TCP to carry H.323 signaling in the transport layer. Corporate customers using the Koç.net infrastructure with this protocol and the other operators receive a phone service with security measures provided at IP level. All the interfaces of Koç.net backbone facing the customer have been configured to operate in compliance with the ITU-T Recommendation Q.931 documentation.

DTMF dialing is performed using various methods over H.323. Koç.net infrastructure accepts the DTMF methods specified in the RFC 2833[4] standards. In addition, DTMF signaling is also accepted as out-of-band over H.245[2] signaling.
